Pediatric Night guards

Sometimes kids will grind their teeth while they sleep, which frequently leads to problems with having a restful sleep and feeling tired throughout the day. Not having a good rest during childhood can make it quite difficult to perform well in school. Parents usually have a lot of questions for us about pediatric night guards, so we will try to answer some of the more common questions here.

Can a Child Use a Night guard?


This depends on the child and their situation. We cannot recommend night guards for all children as there are plenty of scenarios where it can’t work, and shouldn’t be used for treatment. If a child is too young, or if their teeth are still changing greatly, we might choose not to recommend dental night guards to our patients. We do have a variety of treatment options at our disposal for nighttime bruxism and have successfully treated many children in the Puget Sound area.

What Causes Teeth Grinding in Children?


There is no clear answer as to why children grind their teeth, although there are some widely agreed upon contributing factors. Stress and anxiety in the patient seem to be a fairly common contributing factors to bruxism in both children and adults.

What Can I Do To Lower My Kid’s Stress Levels?


Creating a more relaxing environment for your child isn’t always easy, but it’s almost always worth it. A child who feels less stress or anxiety gets a better sleep does better in school and behaves in a more “even” manner. Plus, who doesn’t want their kids to be less stressed? Here are some ways to try and make things less stressful for your child:
•  Make routine, a routine. Kids love to know that they can depend on things in their life being similar. Have a set bedtime, plan lunches out the night before school, always read a story before bed. These little dependable routines can make a big difference.
•  If you are stressed, they are stressed. Kids pick up on your emotional state very easily, and when they feel that you are stressed out, they will mirror you.
•  Make their surroundings soothing. Give them the option to decorate their room, let them choose the color for the paint, and try to make cleaning up with your kids a priority.
•  Attempt to reinforce positive behavior instead of harping on negative behavior.
•  Exercise is a great way to help relieve stress, try to get your kids out and about exercising.

Is There Another Reason My Child is Grinding or Clenching?


The bones in children are always changing and growing, which can give rise to growing pains. During the Nascent stages of development, the top and bottom set of teeth don’t always fit together correctly. When the jaw doesn’t sit properly due to teeth being out of alignment, the body’s natural response is to grind or clench to find a comfortable place to rest the jaw. It could also be a habit that they picked up and haven’t outgrown.
