Thumb Sucking

Cute little boy sucking his thumb at Puget Sound Pediatric DentistryYour children are our job at Puget Sound Pediatrics and we know how important their comfort along with their health is.
Our babies are so sweet when they suck their thumbs. They do this because sucking is natural to them, and it soothes them, and as parents, we like when they can self-soothe. Children usually cease thumb sucking by the age of two, long before their permanent front teeth are ready to erupt. We encourage parents to assist your child in stopping thumb sucking before their permanent teeth ascend. Some parents find breaking a baby of a pacifier to be easier than their thumb. Thumb sucking that persist when the permanent teeth erupt find that that improper growth and misalignment of the teeth can occur

How do I stop my child from sucking their thumb?

Most children stop these habits on their own. If you notice prolonged thumb sucking behavior in your child, here are some tips to help your child stop.
•  Have a conversation with your child about why now is a good time to stop
•  Limit their thumb sucking to their room or at bed time only
•  Point out to them that they are doing it, ask "Do you need to suck your thumb right now?"
•  Discuss with them that when children get older, its not appropriate any longer, point out that you do not suck your thumb, nor does a person or character that they like

Eventually all children do give up sucking their thumb, the younger the better. For more tips and information contact one of our doctors:
